New Year's Day at Niagara Falls

After celebrating 01/01/2017 greeting the sunrise at the Grand Canyon, we debated on a spot that could match that epic experience. We were just driving through Ontario, Canada at the time, and Niagara Falls immediately jumped out as a perfect spot.

Except for one thing: it was record cold at the Falls, so cold that its surroundings were completely frozen.

We got to the falls on New Years Eve, where people braved -20C temperatures waiting for midnight to strike. Niagara Falls actually threw an outdoor party with a massive stage, live performances and fireworks. As cold as it was, the entire place was packed.

We retreated to our AirBnB for the night relatively early (sorry Pebs!), popped a bottle of local champaign and passed out not long after midnight.

New Year's Day

We greeted 01/01/2018 at around 5am. Ugh. After packing up, we drove back to the edge of the Falls, which was already packed with photographers. It was so cold we could barely touch the tripods when setting up.

Nick was a total trooper staying outside monitoring the cameras. I ducked in and out (mostly in) to the nearby building, and watched the freezing photographers at work.

The view was absolutely gorgeous and made the cold (and lack of sleep) totally worth it! Also Tim Horton's opened up pretty early, and we got to warm our hands (and stomaches) with hot coffee, cocoa and donuts galore.

Poor Pebs suffered quite a deal too. We made up for it eventually by giving her a full bath to wash away all the mud and rock salt.

Peb's severely unimpressed face, complete with wind diaper (the thing around her grill) and salt stains. I'm so sorry!

2017's been a blast. Here's to 2018!
